Notes & tips

  • Make a small swatch before starting your project to check how the fabric stretches and to estimate gauge. This stitch produces an elastic fabric; gauge will differ from plain stockinette.
  • Keep an even tension when working the special knit-through-front-back-front sequence (Row 5) to maintain consistent loop sizes and elasticity.
  • The selvage stitches (sel s) make seaming easier and give a neat edge when working panels. For circular knitting, adapt selvage handling as needed.
  • Because the pattern includes p3tog and a multi-loop decrease on alternate rows, the fabric has a distinctive textured rib that stretches well—ideal for edges and fitted items.
  • Block gently if desired; some acrylic yarns change drape slightly after washing, so test before finishing a large project.

Suggested uses: hat brims, sock cuffs, sweater hems, wrist warmers and any piece that benefits from a stretchier edge. Enjoy experimenting with this elastic stitch to add comfort and fit to your knits.
