Guelder‑Rose Stitch: Easy 8‑Row Textured Knit Pattern for Scarves & Sweaters

The Guelder‑Rose Stitch is an elegant textured pattern that creates clusters of raised stitches reminiscent of Guelder‑Rose flowers. It works beautifully for scarves, sweaters, blankets and other accessories when you want a sophisticated, tactile surface. This page gives materials, common abbreviations, and a clear 8‑row repeat you can follow to produce the motif.

Knitting materials and tools:

  • DPN 4 mm (UK 8 or US 6)
  • Super Corfou – 100% Acrylic, Color #45, 40 grams – 95 meters

Common abbreviations:

  • k – knit
  • p – purl
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • sel s – selvage stitch: slip the first stitch purlwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch
  • yo – yarn over
  • dwk – double wrap knit stitch: insert the needle through the stitch and instead of wrapping once, wrap the working yarn twice, then pull through like a normal knit stitch

Pattern notes: Cast on a multiple of 11 sts, plus 1 extra stitch, plus 2 selvage stitches. (Example: 11 x 3 = 33; 33 + 1 + 2 = 36 sts.) Maintain the sel s at the beginning and end of each row as directed. Repeat Rows 1–8 for the pattern.

Guelder‑Rose stitch instructions (Rows 1–8):

Row 1: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.

Row 2: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.

Row 3: sel s, *k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, [dwk] – 6 times, k1, yo, k1, yo; repeat from * across, k1, sel s.

Row 4: sel s, *p5, slip next 6 stitches from the right‑hand needle to the left without working them (you will have 6 elongated stitches), p4; repeat from *, p1, sel s.

Row 5: sel s, *k5, knit the next 6 elongated stitches: first knit them through the back loops and then through the front loops so that 2 stitches are formed from the 6 elongated wraps, k4; repeat from *, k1, sel s.

Row 6: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.

Row 7: sel s, knit all stitches, sel s.

Row 8: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.

Repeat Rows 1–8 for the pattern repeat. Tip: work the slipped elongated stitches on Row 4 with an even, gentle tension so the resulting clusters sit neatly; block gently after finishing to open the texture if desired.
