Knitted Fortress Stitch: A Cozy, Textured Pattern for Blankets & Scarves
The Knitted Fortress Stitch is like a cozy hug for your knitting projects — a sturdy, highly textured stitch created by strategically slipping stitches to form bold, bumpy ridges. It's perfect for blankets, scarves, and sweaters where extra structure and warmth are desired. The pattern is simple to memorize (only two rows) and works beautifully in bulky yarn for quick, satisfying results.

Fortress knit stitch instructions:
Cast on a multiple of 2 sts, plus 1 extra sts, plus 2 selvage stitches.
Row1 (RS): sel s, *p1, slip the next sts holding yarn in back – repeat from *, p1, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, *slip the next sts holding yarn in front, k1– repeat from *, slip the next sts holding yarn in front, sel s.
Repeat Rows 1-2 to form pattern.
Tips: Work a small swatch to see how the slipped stitches affect gauge and drape. Keep your slipped stitches consistent in tension — slightly looser slipped stitches will emphasize the raised texture, while tighter slips will make the fabric denser. This two-row repeat is easy to memorize, so it makes a great choice for portable knitting or long projects that benefit from a repetitive, calming rhythm.
