Cozy Garter-Stitch Scarf with Button Closure — Easy Knit Pattern

Finished garter-stitch scarf shown folded, featuring the buttoned end for a secure wrap.

Materials: Approximately 1 ball of Provincial Tweed 250y/100g yarn; 4 buttons (1/2.5 cm) of your choice.

Needle Size: 7 (US) / 4.5 mm straight needle

Gauge (tension): 24 sts & 28 rows in garter stitch = 10 cm square, using size 7 (US) 4.5 mm needles

Finished Measurement Laid Flat: 6 x 25 ins (15 × 62.5 cms)

METHOD

This scarf is knit flat with buttonholes on one end and buttoned together.

Scarf Instructions

Cast on 36 sts.

Work in garter stitch (knit every row) until your work measures approximately 24 ins / 57.5 cms or desired length (remember: longer scarf uses more yarn).

Buttonhole row – k4 [yo, k2tog, k7] repeat to 3 times, yo, k2tog, k3

Now work in garter stitch until your work measures 25 ins / 62.5 cms.

Bind off.

Sew your buttons on the right side of the front on the cast-on side (reference picture above for placement).

OPTIONAL: Add 4 tassels on the bind-off side under the buttonholes. The pattern author likes tassels about 4 ins / 10 cms long, but make them to your desired length.

Tips:

  • To check placement of the buttons before sewing, wrap the scarf and mark where the buttonholes meet the cast-on edge.
  • Keep your tension even while making the buttonholes so they sit neatly when buttoned.

ABBREVIATIONS

  • K – knit
  • YO – yarn over
  • K2TOG – knit 2 together
  • Sts – stitches
  • Cms – centimeters
