Easy Super-Chunky 2x2 Rib Scarf with Button Closures — Free Pattern

Make a warm, fashionable scarf in a few hours with this easy super-chunky 2x2 rib pattern. The textured rib gives a classic look while three simple buttonholes let you secure the scarf in different styles. This pattern is beginner-friendly and uses large needles and bulky yarn so it knits up quickly.

Easy Super-Chunky 2x2 Rib Scarf with Button Closures — Free Pattern

Caption: A super-chunky 2x2 rib scarf with three button closures — a quick, cozy knit.

Abbreviations:

- K = Knit
- P = Purl
- K2tog = Knit 2 together
- Sts = Stitches
- YO = Yarn Over

Materials:

- US #11 needles
- Super chunky yarn
- 3 medium-size buttons

Instructions:

Cast on 34 stitches (multiple of 2).

Pattern (establish 2x2 rib):
Row 1 (RS): *K2, P2* — repeat to end.
Row 2 (WS): *P2, K2* — repeat to end.
Work rows 1 and 2 until the ribbed edge measures 1 1/2".

Buttonhole row (work in established 2x2 rib):
Keeping the 2x2 rib pattern, work as follows across the row: K5, YO, K12, YO, K12, YO, K5. When the directions say "K# sts", continue working those stitches in the 2x2 rib pattern (k2/p2) rather than plain knit.

Next row (work the YO openings into buttonholes):
On the following row, work K5, then for each YO work: Purl the YO, K2tog. Repeat this sequence for each of the two remaining YOs to set the buttonhole openings into the ribbed fabric. Continue working the established 2x2 rib pattern across the row.

Continue in 2x2 rib (rows 1 and 2) until the scarf measures 27" from the cast-on edge (or to your preferred length).

Finishing:

Bind off in pattern. Weave in ends. Sew buttons opposite the buttonholes — see the photo for button placement guidance. Block gently if desired to even out stitches.

Notes/Tips:

- Because this uses super-chunky yarn, gauge is flexible; adjust length for personal preference.
- Work buttonholes where they line up with the buttons when folded over; small adjustments of a stitch or two are fine.
- If you prefer fewer buttonholes, omit one YO sequence and use two buttons instead.
