Make an Adorable Knitted 'Catty McCat Face' — Easy Small & Medium Kitty Pattern

Meet Catty McCat Face: a simple, cuddly knitted cat that's perfect for gifting, decorating, or keeping on your lap while you read. This quick project is suitable for knitters who know basic stitches and seaming. The pattern yields two sizes — Small (DK yarn) and Medium (chunky or double-stranded DK) — and uses minimal materials.

Materials

Small Cat

• Small amount of DK yarn
• 3.25mm or 3.5mm needles
• Small amount of polyester stuffing
• Ribbon

Medium Cat

• Small amount of (UK) chunky yarn or 2 lengths of DK yarn knitted together
• 5mm needles
• Small amount of polyester stuffing
• Ribbon

Notes: Use polyester stuffing and sew seams securely if making this toy for young children. Adjust stuffing to achieve a firmer or softer finish as desired.

Pattern (body)

1. Cast on 9 sts (leave a 6" tail to use for sewing up).
2. Knit in rib for 3 rows.
3. Work stocking stitch for 33 rows.
4. Rib for 2 rows.
5. Cast off in rib. Cut yarn leaving a 6" tail to use for sewing up.
6. Fold the piece in half lengthways with right sides together and join the side seams (do not cut off the yarn yet).
7. Turn right side out and stuff the top third to form the head.
8. Tie a length of yarn or ribbon around to define the neck.
9. Stuff the rest of the body and join the bottom edge.

Shaping ears and tail

1. Using the yarn left from the side seams, add a couple of stitches to help define the ears.
2. Tail: Cast on 12 sts, then cast off. Sew the tail along the back lower edge from the middle toward the side.

Finishing

• Sew the tail in place securely.
• Add facial features using a small length of contrasting yarn — stitch on eyes, nose and whiskers.
• Weave in any loose ends and trim excess yarn.

Optional: Add a small ribbon around the neck for a decorative touch. This simple shape is easy to adapt — change yarn weight or length of stocking stitch rows to alter the size and proportions.
