  • [CC] Shown in #7825 (Child) and #2415 (Adult); 1 skein
  • Recommended needle size:
  • 1 set of 4 US #6/4mm double-point needles
  • [always use a needle size that gives you the gauge listed below -- every knitter's gauge is unique]
  • Stitch holder or waste yarn
  • Tapestry needle


GAUGE

20 sts/24 rows = 4 inches in chart patterns


PATTERN NOTES

When working the striped thumb gusset, the yarn not in use will form long floats at the back of the work. These floats should be caught or woven every few stitches. More information about managing floats in stranded knitting can be found here.

LEFT MITTEN

Using MC, CO 32[40, 48] sts. Divide sts between needles, placing 16[20, 24] sts on first needle (Needle 1) and 8[10, 12] sts each on the remaining 2 needles (Needles 2 and 3). Join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist.

Round 1: [K1 using MC, k1 using CC] to end.

Round 2: [K1 using MC, p1 using CC] to end.

Repeat Round 2 until work measures 1.5[2, 2.5] inches.

Next Round: Using MC, k1, m1, k16[20, 24], m1, k to end. 34[42, 50] sts.

Set Up Patterns for Hand:

Next Round: Work sts on Needle 1 following Matrix Chart; work sts on Needles 2 and 3 following Palm Chart. Pattern repeat for Matrix Chart will be worked 3[4, 5] times, pattern repeat for Palm Chart will be worked 7[9, 11] times.

Work 3[7, 7] more rounds in pattern.

Thumb Gusset:

Round 1: Work in pattern to end of round, work Row 1 of Gusset Chart. Newly made st is at the end of Needle 3.

Continue in pattern, working Gusset Chart at end of Needle 3, until you have completed Round 10[14, 16] of Gusset Chart. 43[55, 65] sts; 9[13, 15] sts in Gusset.

Next Round: Work in pattern to beginning of Gusset; place 9[13, 15] sts of Gusset on st holder or waste yarn, CO 1 st using MC onto Needle 1 using Backward Loop method. 35[43, 51] sts.

Work 1 round in pattern.

Next Round: K2tog, work in pattern to end. 34[42, 50] sts.

Continue in pattern until work measures approx. 1.5[1.75, 2] inches less than desired length.

Decrease Round: K1, k2tog, work in pattern to last 3 sts on Needle 1, ssk, k1; k1, k2tog, work in pattern to last 3 sts on Needle 3, ssk, k1.

Work 1 round in pattern.

Repeat these 2 rounds 3[4, 5] times more. 18[22, 26] sts. Break CC.

Last Round: Using MC, k all sts.

Graft sts on Needle 1 to sts on Needles 2 and 3.

Thumb:

Replace held sts of gusset on 2 needles. Using a third needle and CC, pick up and k 3 sts in CO edge between gusset and hand; k gusset sts using CC. 12[16, 18] sts.

Work in stripe pattern as established until work measures 0.5[0.75, 0.75] inch less than desired length.

Size Adult L Only:

Next Round: [K7, k2tog] twice. 16 sts.

All Sizes:

In the set of rows that follow, begin on Round 3 for Child, Round 1 for Adult M or L.

Round 1: [K2, k2tog] 4 times. 12 sts.

Round 2: K all sts.

Round 3: [K1, k2tog] 4 times. 8 sts.

Round 4: K all sts.

Round 5: [K2tog] 4 times.

Break yarn, draw through remaining 4 sts and pull tight.

RIGHT MITTEN

Work as for Left Mitten to beginning of thumb gusset.

Thumb Gusset:

Round 1: Work in pattern to end of Needle 1; at beginning of Needle 2, work Row 1 of Gusset Chart; work in patten to end of round.

Continue in pattern, working Gusset Chart at beginning of Needle 2, until you have completed Round 10[14, 16] of Gusset Chart. 43[55, 66] sts; 9[13, 15] sts in Gusset.

Next Round: Work in pattern to beginning of Gusset; place 9[13, 15] sts of Gusset on hold on st holder or waste yarn, CO 1 st using MC onto Needle 2; work in pattern to end of round. 35[43, 51] sts.

Work 1 round in pattern.

Next Round: Work sts on Needle 1 in pattern; k2tog, work in pattern to end. 34[43, 51] sts.

Continue as for Left Mitten.

FINISHING

Weave in all ends.
