Easy Knitted Summer Flower Headbands — Baby & Child Sizes + Small Flower Pattern

Add a cheerful, handmade touch to summer outfits with knitted flower headbands. These lightweight DK (8ply) headbands are quick to knit on 4mm needles and come in sizes for babies through older children. Below you’ll find stitch counts by age, a two-colour and single-colour headband pattern, plus the small knitted flower motif used to decorate them.

Summer Flower Headbands — Sizes

Babies' heads vary a lot in size — use this stitch guide as a starting point for the age ranges below.

  • 0 - 3 months: 65 sts
  • 6 months: 69 sts
  • 9 months: 73 sts
  • 12 months: 77 sts
  • 1 - 2 years: 81 sts
  • 3 – 4 years: 85 sts
  • 4 – 10 years: 89 sts

These headbands use DK (8ply) yarn and 4mm needles.

Two-colour Summer Flower Headband

Using first colour, cast on the number of stitches required for your size (example: 65 sts for 0–3 months).

1st Row: K1, *(k2, p2) repeat from * to last 4 sts, k2, p1, k1

2nd Row: S1, k1, *(p2, k2) repeat from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1

Join in second colour ~

3rd Row: Knit

4th Row: S1, k1, *(p2, k2) repeat from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1

Using first colour ~

5th Row: Knit

6th Row: S1, k1, *(p2, k2) repeat from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1

Using second colour ~

7th Row: Knit

8th Row: S1, k1, *(p2, k2) repeat from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1

Using first colour ~

9th Row: Knit

10th Row: S1, k1, *(p2, k2) repeat from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1

Cast off loosely – use a bigger needle or a stretchy cast off.

Summer Flower Baby Headband in One Colour

These are made with DK (8ply) yarn and 4mm needles.

Cast on the required number of stitches (e.g. 65 sts for 0–3 months).

1st Row: K1, *(k2, p2) repeat from * to last 4 sts, k2, p1, k1

2nd Row: S1, k1, *(p2, k2) repeat from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1

Repeat the last 2 rows 4 times more.

Cast off loosely – use a bigger needle or a stretchy cast off.

Small Summer Knitted Flowers (Decoration)

Cast on 42 sts.

K1, cast off 5 sts (2 sts on right hand needle), k1, cast off 5 sts (4 sts on right hand needle), k1, cast off 5 sts (6 sts on right hand needle), k1, cast off 5 sts (8 sts on right hand needle), k1, cast off 5 sts (10 sts on right hand needle), k1, cast off 5 sts (12 sts on right hand needle)

Small knitted flower motifs ready to be shaped and sewn to the headband; add a button to the centre for extra detail.

Cut the yarn leaving a 6" tail. Thread the tail through each of the remaining 12 sts and pull tight. Use the tail from the cast on to join the first and last petals. Shape the flower, sew in ends and add a button to the centre of each flower.

Finishing note: Sew the flower(s) securely to the headband and weave in all ends. For a stretchier finish, use a larger needle to cast off or a specifically stretchy bind-off method.
