Easy Knitted Mitred Square — Quick Diagonal Square Pattern for Blankets & Coasters

The knitted Mitred Square is a quick, satisfying small project that produces a neat diagonal design. Worked in garter stitch (knit every row), the square is formed by centered decreases that create a striking diagonal seam. These squares are perfect for stash-busting, making blankets, cushions, scarves, or individual coasters — and they’re great for knitters of all skill levels.

Materials: yarn of your choice, needles appropriate for that yarn, stitch marker, tapestry needle for finishing. Choose any yarn/needle combination that gives you the fabric you want — DK, worsted or aran all work; adjust needle size accordingly.

Stitches used:

  • k – knit
  • ssk – slip, slip, knit (left-leaning decrease)
  • k2tog – knit two together (right-leaning decrease)

Written pattern:

Cast on: Using your preferred cast-on method (long-tail cast-on works well), cast on an EVEN number of stitches.

Row 1 (Right side): Knit half your stitches, place stitch marker, knit remaining stitches. Turn.

Row 2 (Wrong side): Knit to 2 stitches before marker, k2tog, slip marker, ssk, knit remaining stitches. Turn.

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until only 2 stitches remain.

Final row: k2tog, break yarn leaving a tail and pull through last stitch to fasten off. Weave in ends with a tapestry needle.

Notes & tips:

  • This pattern is worked in garter stitch (knit every row), so the fabric will be squishy and reversible.
  • Keep an even tension on decreases so the diagonal line stays neat.
  • To make larger or smaller squares, cast on more or fewer stitches (always an even number) and follow the same decrease sequence.
  • Join multiple mitred squares using mattress stitch, whipstitch, or a crochet join. Arrange diagonals for different visual effects.
  • Block squares lightly if desired to even out stitches and make joins easier.

Variations:

  • Change color at any point (carry yarn or weave in ends) to make striped or half-and-half mitred squares.
  • Use different yarn weights or needle sizes to create a textured patchwork of varying drape and thickness.

Enjoy knitting — these squares are quick to make and endlessly customizable!
