Knitting materials and tools:
- Double pointed knitting needles 3 mm (UK 11).
- Any DK weight yarn will work – 100% acrylic.
- Weight Category – (3) Double Knitting. Quantity – 10 grams.
Knit baby socks size:
0-4 months – 10 cm Sock Length
Gauge: 22 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Common abbreviations of knit stitches:
- k – knit
- k2tog – knit two together
- p – purl
- p2tog – purl two together
- slip p – slip the next stitch purlwise
- pm – place marker
- sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch.
- skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done.
Newborn baby socks knitting pattern:
Make two.
Knitting the cuff:
Cast on 32 stitches. I will use 4 double-pointed needles, as it is more convenient for knitting small-size socks.
Rounds 1-20: [k1 p1] – around.
At this point the ribbing part measures about 7 cm (2.75 in)
Round 21: knit all stitches around.
Round 22: [p1, k2] – repeat 5 times, p1, k16.
Rounds 23-25: Repeat Round 22.
Round 26: p16, k16.
Rounds 27-29: repeat Round 22.
Shaping the heel:
Turn your work and begin knitting in the opposite direction.
Row 1: slip p, k14, sel s. Turn.
Rows 2-13: sel s, k14, sel s. Turn.
Knitting heel flap:
Divide heel stitches into 3 parts and place stitch markers as follows: 5 sts, pm, 6 sts, pm, 5 sts.
Row 1: sel s, k9, p2tog. Turn.
Row 2: sel s, p4, k2tog, Turn.
Row 3: slip p, k4, p2tod. Turn
Row 4: Repeat Row 2. Turn.
Row 5: Repeat Row 3. Turn.
Repeat the last 2 rows until you have 6 stitches left on your needles.
It’s time to pick up stitches from the gusset and continue knitting the sock in the round.
Round 1: slip p, k5, pick up 8 stitches, [p1, k2] – repeat 5 times, p1, pick up 8 stitches, k14. (38)
Round 2: p16, skpo, k18, k2tog. (36)
Round 3: [p1, k2] – repeat 5 times, p1, k20.
Round 4: [p1, k2] – repeat 5 times, p1, skpo, k16, k2tog. (34)
Round 5: [p1, k2] – repeat 5 times, p1, k18.
Round 6: [p1, k2] – repeat 5 times, p1, skpo, k14, k2tog. (32)
Round 7: p16, k16.
Rounds 8-11: [p1, k2] – repeat 5 times, p1, k16.
Round 12: p16, k16.
Repeat Rounds 8-12 once more or until the sole of the socks measures 8 cm (3.1 in)
Toe Decrease Section:
Round 1: [k1, skpo, k10, k2tog, k1] – twice.
Round 2: [k1, skpo, k8, k2tog, k1] – twice.
Round 3: [k1, skpo, k6, k2tog, k1] – twice.
Round 4: [k1, skpo, k4, k2tog, k1] – twice.
Round 5: [k1, skpo, k2, k2tog, k1] – twice.
Round 6: [k1, skpo, k2tog, k1] – twice. (8)
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the toe. Weave in all ends securely.
