Materials: Knit Picks (affiliate link) Wool of the Andes 100% wool worsted weight yarn 110 yards (101 meters) / 50 grams - 1 skein.
Needles: double pointed needles (dpn) US #6 (4mm) OR SIZE NEEDED TO OBTAIN GAUGE
Gauge for stockinette st: 19 st x 28rows = 4" x 4" (10 cm x 10 cm)
Notions:
yarn needle, 1 decorative button or pin of contrast color, sewing needle and thread of matching color.
Abbreviations:
k - knit
p - purl
k2tog - knit 2 together
cdd - central double decrease: slip 2 sts together as if to knit, knit the next stitch, pass both slipped sts over just knited.
pu&k- pick up and knit
m1 - make 1 increase - I used the increase described by Elizabeth Zimmerman: make a backward loop over the right-hand needle and in the next row/round purl/knit as a regular stitch.

pm - place marker

Hat
Cast on 56, distribute evenly on 4 dpn, join into rounds taking care not to twist the stitches.
Work 12 rounds in stockinette: all rounds knit.
Rounds 13-15 work in reversed stockinette: all rounds- purl.
Rounds 16 - 20: knit
Rounds 21-23: purl
Rounds 24 -27: knit
Round 28: * k5, k2tog -repeat from * 8 times
Round 29: knit
Round 30: * k4, k2tog - repeat from * 8 times
Round 31: * k3, k2tog - repeat from * 8 times
Round 32: knit
Round 33: * k2, k2tog - repeat from * 8 times
Round 34: knit
Round 35: * k1, k2tog - repeat from * 8 times
Round 36: knit
Round 37: k2tog 8 times
Cut yarn, leaving a 6" tail. Pull through all the remaining sts and secure.
Finishing
Weave in all yarn ends. To shape the hat, thread a tapestry needle with a piece of the same yarn and sew over the rolled brim and 2 rows of reversed stockinette on one side to slightly gather them. You can leave the hat as it is, or decorate over this seam with a pin, button, crochet or felted flower.
