Knitted Peace Mittens

Materials: 100-150yds bulky weight (size 5) yarn (I used Premier Anti-Pilling Bamboo Chunky (131yd/100g), size 8 (5mm) dpn or circular needles for magic loop method, yarn needle, stitch marker

Stitch Key

  • K – knit
  • P – purl
  • M1 – make 1 increase
  • sts – stitches
  • k2tog – knit 2 sts together
  • p2tog – purl 2 sts together

Gauge: appx 3.5sts x 6rows per inch GAUGE IS IMPORTANT! SWATCH FIRST!

Sizes – child, ladies

Notes – These mittens are NOT left and right specific so make 2 of the below instructions. There are no notations for left-handed knitters because these are ambidextrous.


Peace Stitch Pattern

Round 1 – knit around

Round 2 – purl around

Round 3 – knit around

Round 4 – purl around

Round 5 – knit around

Round 6 – [k1, p1] around

Round 7 – [k1, p1] around

Round 8 – [k1, p1] around]


Peace Mittens Pattern

Wrist

Cast on 26/30 sts. Join in the round. Place beginning of round marker.

K1P1 ribbing for 16/20 rounds


Hand

From here begin working in Peace stitch pattern

Round 1 – m1, k1, m1 work around [28/32sts]

Round 2 & 3 – work in Peace Stitch Pattern around


Thumb Gusset

Round 3 – m1, work 2, m1, work in pattern around. [30/34sts]

Round 4 – work in pattern around

Round 5 – m1, work 4, m1, work in pattern around. [32/36sts]

Continue increasing thumb in pattern until there are 8/10 thumb sts.

After the last increase round place thumb sts on a stitch holder or spare yarn and remover marker. [26/30sts]


Hand

cast on 1, pm, cast on 1, work in pattern around. [28/32sts]

Work in pattern for 20/28 rounds. You should have completed 4, 5 pattern repeats total over the mitten. Your last round should be a round 8 on your pattern repeat.


Decrease

Round 1 – [k2tog, k2] repeat [to] around (21/24sts)

Round 2 – purl around

Round 3 – [k2tog, k1] repeat [to[ around (14/16sts)

Round 4 – purl around

Round 5 – k2tog around (7/8sts)

Do not bind off. Cut yarn leaving 8-10ins to weave ends. Thread the yarn through your remaining sts and cinch closed.


Thumb

Pick up 4sts along the cast on edge, place the sts on the stitch holder on your needles. [12/14sts]

Work in pattern for 13/16 rounds.

Next Round – p2tog around 6/7sts

Do not bind off. Cut yarn leaving 8-10ins to weave ends. Thread the yarn through your remaining sts and cinch closed.

Weave in all ends, make another mitten for your other hand, and enjoy your toasty warm hands.
