Knitting materials and tools:
Circular or straight knitting needles 9 mm (US 13/UK 00). Use 10 mm if you find yourself a tight knitter.
Lion Brand Wool, Ease Thick & Quick – 20% wool, 80% acrylic. Color of your choice.
Weight Category – 6. Quantity – 125-130 grams. If you have difficulty to find aforementioned brand of yarn, use something else that will have about 60 m (65 yards) per 100 grams skein.
Common abbreviations of knit stitches:
k – knit
k2tog – knit two together
p – purl
sel s – selvage stitch: always slip the first stitch knitwise, work to the last stitch, purl the last stitch
skpo – Slip, Knit, Pass Over: Slip one stitch to the right needle knitwise, knit in the next stitch and drop this stitch off the left needle, insert the left needle into the slipped stitch, pass it over the knit stitch and it’s done
Knit flat super bulky hat size:
Head circumference: Teen/Adult: 53-58 cm (21-23”)
Gauge: 9-10 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette
Super bulky flat knit hat pattern:
Using the long tail method, cast on 47 sts or any other odd number.
Knitting hat’s body:
Row 1: sel s, [k1, p1] – repeat across, k1, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, [p1, k1] – repeat across, p1, sel s.
Row 3: sel s, [slip the next knit stitch, insert the needle one stitch below (into the purl stitch), draw up a long loop, yarn over, and then work a skpo] – repeat across, k1, sel s.
Row 4: sel s, [p2tog, k1] – repeat across, p1, sel s.
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until the hat reaches a height of 20 cm. My hat measures 40 cm in width.
Shaping hat’s crown:
Row 1: sel s, [skpo] – repeat across, k1, sel s.
Row 2: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 3: sel s, [skpo] – repeat across, k1, sel s.
Row 4: sel s, purl all stitches, sel s.
Row 5: sel s, [skpo] – repeat across, sel s.
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail that is 2-3 times the height of your hat. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the top. With the hat turned right side out, use the mattress stitch to sew the seam, ensuring no stitches are lost and achieving a neat, invisible finish. Weave in the ends securely.
